ATM Frauds

ATMs are a prime target for criminals. ATM scams can involve stealing your card details or PIN.

ATM Skimming

In ATM skimming, criminal actors attach a scanning device to the ATM card reader slot to record account details and PIN from your card. Once the information is captured, criminals use the details to create a cloned card or make transactions.

The criminals may also install a fake keypad on top of the legitimate ATM keypad to record the PIN when you enter it. In other situations, the criminals just stand behind you and watch you enter the card PIN.

How To Protect Yourself From ATM Skimming

Below are useful tips and safety measures to help ensure your safety and security when conducting ATM and POS transactions:

Your safety is our priority

  • Be aware of your surroundings when using ATMs and POS.
  • Do not accept help from any unknown person when using an ATM.
  • Avoid using ATMs in crowded places.
  • When possible, conduct ATM transactions during the day; most ATM crimes happen at night.

ATM Security

  • Do not let your card out of your possession or control
  • Memorize your PIN and do not write it down anywhere
  • Do not disclose your PIN to others
  • Use ATMs that provide keypad covers. Alternatively, you can cover the keypad while you enter the PIN.
  • Notice signs of ATM tampering or skimming, such as:
    • Extra cameras were installed on the roof of the machine.
    • The keypad is loose or not attached properly.
    • Glue or scratches appear on the ATM or any of its visible components.
    • External wiring or devices attached to the ATM
    • Card readers don't look like other readers.
    • Fake ‘ATM use directions’ are attached to the ATM
